At the anniversary St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, the ambassadors of the Central American Integration System (CAIS) nations visited the St. Petersburg Research Institute of Vaccines and Serums (SPbSRIVS) of the Russian Federal Biomedical Agency. The purpose of the visit was to become acquainted with the leading Russian manufacturer of vaccines for the prevention of influenza and exchange views on the prospects of the Institute’s current biotech project Mechnikov S.A. in Nicaragua.
“We certainly support and are interested in the implementation of the project Mechnikov S.A. It is important not only for Nicaragua, but for all Latin American nations. Russian technology and the vaccines synthesized here meet the most modern requirements. We are willing to provide the necessary support for the future development of the project,” said Ms. Carmen Eleonoru Ortes Williams, the Ambassador of Honduras and the Chair of CAIS.
The project Mechnikov S.A. will significantly reduce the shortage of vaccines for the prevention of influenza in Latin America, primarily due to acquisition of the technology by the region and competitive pricing.
Participants of the meeting particularly noted the strategic significance of the project in the event of a pandemic, because today, regional producers are unable to satisfy the region’s combined demand for vaccines. By making full use of Mechnikov S.A.’s capacity, Nicaragua will be able to provide influenza protection to its own residents and also supply enough vaccine to PAHO for distribution throughout the region.
