UNIDO and Russia working on vaccine production technology transfer to improve healthcare in Latin America and the Caribbean.
In Vienna, 16 October 2017, representatives of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization’s Latin America and Caribbean Division and the St. Petersburg Research Institute of Vaccines and Serums and the Bacterial Preparation Factory (SPbSRIVS) met to discuss challenges and opportunities related to technology transfer within the framework of the interregional project “Strengthening Alliances between LAC and Russia”.
Andrey Vasiliev, Deputy Director of SPbSRIVS shared experience in constructing the Latin American Biotechnology Institute MECHNIKOV, and technology transfer with the Republic of Nicaragua. Following the opinion of representatives of UNIDO, the project, which aims to improve the quality of healthcare in Nicaragua and meet the influenza vaccine deficit in Latin American and Caribbean countries (LAC), is a model that can be replicated in other countries and regions.
This meeting concluded with a preliminary agreement to hold the 1st International UNIDO Conference “Strengthening strategic alliances in the area of biopharma between LAC and Russia” in October/November 2018.
